Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute in 1950 – 1960s

During the 1950s-1960s, the KIFh has actively created a powerful educational and scientific potential and strengthened the material and technical base. In 1952 the military-pharmaceutical faculty was established by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR at the institute (the organizer was Colonel      V.H.Chornobrovyi), which established the tradition of training military experts.  Almost 400 specialists have been trained for the armed forces of the country within six years of its existence. The pharmaceutical faculty has joined the military-medical faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Institute since 1956.

In 1954 a new curriculum with a term of education of five years was introduced, which envisaged 30 weeks of practice: work experience internship – at pharmacies, control and analytical laboratories, at pharmaceutical plants and educational – in the culture of medicinal plants. Active scientific work was carried out. The next year two doctoral and eleven candidate’s theses were prepared at the institute; 24 graduate students of the KIFh were admitted to the postgraduate study.

It was KIFh which had the honourary mission to take delegates to the I Congress of pharmacists of Ukraine in their walls, which took place in Kharkiv from April 3 to April 5, 1963. It summed up the achievements of the pharmaceutical science and industry, defining the task of improving the medical provision of the population.

KIFh has started to train specialists-pharmacists for foreign countries since 1965 as well as to train specialists for the Central Asian republics of the USSR and Moldavia. In more than 50 countries of the world boys and girls have received a pharmacist specialty in the KIFh. To assist with the organization and development of pharmaceutical education and pharmacy some staff members of the republic’s higher educational institutions have worked in a number of fraternal countries and in countries that gained independence.
