February 22, 2023. Participation of Associate Professor of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, Dr. Olha Mykhailenko in the work of the “Spices and Medicine Symposium: Opportunities in a Complex World”

On February 22, 2023, Associate Professor of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, Dr. Olha Mykhailenko, as part of the organizing committee, took part in the international symposium “Spices and Medicine Symposium: Opportunities in a Complex World” at the Maplethorpe Lecture Theater, UCL School of Pharmacy (London, United Kingdom).

The symposium was organized by the scientific group “Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy”, headed by Prof. Michael Heinrich, Pharma & Bio Chemistry, UCL School of Pharmacy (London, United Kingdom).

Reports were presented at the symposium:

  • Banaz Jalil, UCL School of Pharmacy – Best Practice in the chemical characterisation of extracts used in pharmacological and toxicological research – The ConPhyMP – Guidelines
  • Anthony Booker, University of Westminster – Cellular senescence and the quest for immortality: how plants can help you live forever
  • Rachel Frost, UCL Primary Healthcare– Using herbal medicines for healthy ageing in everyday life
  • Francesca Scotti, UCL School of Pharmacy – How to treat infected wounds using a combination of photodynamic and herbal therapy
  • Sukvinder Bhamra, Medway School of Pharmacy – Herbal medicines – my mum’s traditional remedies are trending
  • Janet Schloss, Southern Cross Centre, Australia – Cannabis and Cannabinoids from an Ethnopharmacological Perspective
  • Fabien Schulz – TU Berlin and University Neubrandenburg, Germany – Self-medication in wild mountain gorillas and chimpanzees: The science of zoopharmacognosy in early stage drug discovery.

A special event of the symposium was the Frank Fish Memorial Lecture, delivered by Prof. Judith Rollinger, University of Vienna – “How to Harness Complexity: The Unique Opportunities of Pharmacognosy”.
