Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute during the Great Patriotic War (1941 – 1945)

НAt the beginning of autumn 1941 fascists occupied most of Ukraine, the war approached the largest city of the eastern region – Kharkiv. Realizing that it was almost impossible to defend the city, trying to preserve its industrial and scientific potential, the Soviet government ordered the beginning of the evacuation of Kharkiv. The evacuation of the Kharkov Pharmaceutical Institute has been held in three stages. The first group of employees of the institute as well as the most valuable equipment was sent to the police station in the city of Prokopyevsk Novosibirsk region. The second group, with the rest of the equipment, went to Novosibirsk. The remaining teachers, led by rector Y.G. Borysiuk, were evacuated to the city of Semipalatinsk, Kazakh SSR, where the staff, who went to Novosibirsk, has recently joined them. Much of the property of the institute has been sent to Semipalatinsk. In March 1942 according to the decision of the People’s Commissars of the USSR and the order of the Health Care Committee, the Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute started the educational process.

The difficult conditions have influenced on the institute in Semipalatinsk, delaying the beginning of the educational process for a long time. The first priority for the staff of KIFh was to organize the production of scarce medicines for hospitals and pharmacies on the basis of the pharmacy’s laboratory in the region: anesthetic ether, urotropin, sodium chloride, potassium iodide, camphor oil, and others.

Only in March 1942 according to the decision of the People’s Commissars of the USSR and the order of the Health Care Committee, the Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute started the educational process.

In September 1942 the Dnepropetrovsk Pharmaceutical Institute was moved out Pyatigorsk to Semipalatinsk. And this year, on September 29, according to the order of the All-Union Committee on Higher Education under the SNK of the USSR and the People’s Commissariat of Health of the USSR, no. 483, Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute was merged with Dnipropetrovsk. The director of the DIFh, assistant professor M. B. Volynska headed the united higher educational institution. All employees of KIFh who were in Semipalatinsk, were reffered for the positions according to their qualifications, and took an active part in the further work of the university.
